Officials’ Role Descriptions
Prospective Committee Bureau members are required to select from the available positions listed on the Officials’ Application Form. Whichever position is selected, the corresponding role descriptions are outlined below.
Chairpersons / Presidents
The Chairperson/President is the presiding officer of a simulated committee and has full control over all committee proceedings. The duties of the Chairperson/President include, but are not limited to:

Declaring the opening and closing of each committee meeting

Directing discussions and ensuring the orderly conduct of debates

Ensuring strict observance of the Rules of Procedure by ruling on all Points of Order

Granting the right to speak and managing the speakers’ list

Announcing committee decisions
During discussions, the Chairperson/President may propose:

Limitations on the time allowed to speakers

Limitations on the number of times a representative may speak

Closure of the speakers’ list
-
Closure of debate
The Chairperson/President may also propose the suspension or adjournment of meetings, as well as the adjournment of debate on any item under discussion.
Vice Chairpersons / Vice Presidents
Vice Chairpersons/Vice Presidents are required for all simulated committees, with the exception of the Security Council. Their primary role is to support the Chairperson/President.

Vice Chairpersons/Vice Presidents may be called upon to replace the presiding officer when necessary

When acting as the presiding officer, they possess the same powers, authority, and responsibilities as the Chairperson/President
Committee Secretaries
Committee Secretaries play a key advisory and administrative role within the committee. Their responsibilities include:

Providing continuous guidance and advice to the Chairperson/President on the organization of work, status of negotiations, and overall conduct of committee business, including interpretation of the Ghana International Model United Nations Rules of Procedure

Preparing talking points for the Committee Chairperson for each meeting, in consultation with the Chairperson

Responding to informal questions related to the committee’s agenda and following up with delegates on agenda-related matters

Providing procedural guidance to the Chairperson while seated at the podium

Demonstrating thorough knowledge of GIMUN Rules of Procedure, committee structures, and United Nations resolution processes

Being well-informed on the substantive work of the committee, particularly in relation to the conference theme and general Member State positions

Maintaining regular communication with the GIMUN Secretary-General regarding all conference developments
